A look into our day – Editorial Cartoon Analysis

Sometimes I am asked about some of the things we do in class. I love that question because I get to answer…Think…Critically.

Below is just an example of something we would analyze and discuss to kick off the class. We go way beyond just answering the questions. We look at the cartoons from many angles and have some great discussions. The students get to dive in and think critically, even strategically, and definitely pushes the envelope. It’s awesome to have so many perspectives contributing to the discussions. We all learn. Feel free to analyze and answer the questions yourself.

If you like doing them, click on the HERE and do some more. The phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” is so true and takes on an entirely new meaning when we look at things critically and through multiple perspectives.

The Two Sides of the Political Ideology Spectrum – Conservative and Liberal. Which one reflects YOUR beliefs?

Hello, all. While political discussions tend to bring out the…well…worst in some and the best in others, it’s a subject we must address. Often, our political ideology is influenced, if not determined, by our environment, our family, our friends, the media, or a combination of some or all of the aforementioned.

The 2016 Presidential Election is almost upon us. This election cycle has certainly been one of great contention, controversy, and disagreement. As all presidential elections are, it is important. In fact, ALL elections, at the local, state, and federal level, are important. It is our right and responsibility as Americans to vote. It is a right and responsibility many around the world would love to have. As important as the act of voting is, being a knowledgeable and educated voter is just as important. First, however, we have to get an idea of which side of the political ideology spectrum we reside. Ideology, not a particular candidate or candidates per se, is what we, as voters, should consider. Ideology determines the course the government will take, influences its decisions, policies, etc…

I encourage my students to think for themselves, to do their own research, and understand the opposing view as much, if not more, than their own. I encourage them to have intellectual courage and to be open to opposing viewpoints, perspectives, and ideologies…if for no other reason than to reinforce their own perspectives. What often happens is that they learn something they didn’t know before and are forced to make the decision of whether they will consider this new information or not. Whether they consider the information or not, the fact they were presented with the burden of the decision is a game changer in itself. I want my students to think for themselves and not to simply adopt someone else’s ideology. Why? Because the first time they are asked to defend the ideology or position they claim to hold and/or support, too often they cannot substantiate their assertion, claim, comment, etc… Many of my students say that they want to be relevant, taken seriously, respected. I tell them that it solely up to them. My challenge to my students: If they choose to support and/or defend an ideological perspective, make sure it is their own…not someone else’s.

Here is a link to  a very good resource from Student News Daily. Conservative vs Liberal Beliefs. It’s a bit dated. However, I think it provides a solid base and foundation by which one can determine with which side they identify.

Hey…adults…young adults…staunch whichever side you may be…I encourage you to take a look and read over the information. It could reinforce your beliefs. It could also, perhaps, even force you to reconsider some things. It’s okay to change your mind. Considering another perspective is a sign of intellectual courage…something our country is seriously lacking. It takes guts to truly listen to and consider other perspectives. So…Got Mettle?

See you in class!

Be an ACTIVE participant on Super Tuesday 2016

SUPER TUESDAY IS UPON US!!

Here’s your chance to  get started in your active participation of and in government…and your future.

The 2016 Presidential Election will be one of the most important elections in the history of our country…and one of the most hotly contested.Election-2016-Campaign

Given the importance and the buzz surrounding the 2016 election, several Southern States, including Georgia, Texas, and Alabama, have decided to participate in Super Tuesday and allow the citizens to cast their choice for the state parties’ presidential candidates. This Super Tuesday, March 1st, will be a pivotal day in the campaigns of the candidates and their respective parties as approximately 24% of the overall Republican Party Delegates and 21% of the overall Democratic Party Delegates will be awarded.

Voting will be open from Feb 29 – Mar 1.

We will discuss the results in class and, if all goes as I hope,  we will have an effective, well thought out, enlightened, and productive debate regarding the results.

It should be great. I look forward to the results. See you in class…and at the polls!

Welcome Back!!

WELCOME BACK!!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas break. It’s time to get back into it!

Over the next week or so, we are looking at how this incredible country, the greatest  on earth, was founded and how much, in spite of overwhelming odds, setbacks, challenges, discouragements, and the unknown, determination, dedication, faith, desire, and the unquenchable entrepreneurial spirit of individuals played, and still does, in the making the United States the land of opportunity…and of the free and brave.

I can’t wait for you to join me on this incredible journey this semester. See you in the classroom!

Mr. S

Weeks of 11/2 and 11/9. Also a challenge to have Intellectual Courage.

We are not too far from the home stretch on the Fall Semester. It’s hard to believe we’re already into November. Both the US History and World History classes have found their way into the 20th century. We’ll be looking at everything from the British Industrial Revolution to the Roaring 20’s, the Great Depression, the events leading to and World War I, and so much more.

Make sure to check your class page for presentations, notes, assignments, etc…

Now, one thing we always talk about in class is perspective. It’s so important to get an understanding of what and/or whose perspective historical information is coming from and how the perspective could impact the information being delivered. Also, as I challenged the U.S. History classes today, have Intellectual Courage with regards to all that we will be learning about the 20th century. The one constant theme throughout the 20th century in America has been closed mindedness and narrow points of view. In order to learn, we must open a place in our kind for new information and have the courage to allow it in. New information may do nothing to our point of view or change our minds in the slightest. But, there’s always the chance that new information we allow could change in our lives in so many ways…forcing us to perhaps change a long-held view or at least accept another perspective.

I challenge you, students of today, to have intellectual courage and look at things from all perspectives. And perhaps your actions will rub off on some older folks and prompt them to do the same.

See you in class!

Weeks of August 17-21 & 24-28

Hello, Spartans! I hope the new school year is treating you well. Here’s what’s on tap for the next two weeks:

US History

We are knee-deep in Revolution & Independence!! We will be talking about the foundations of our great country – the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution!

World History

We are and will be hanging out far from our U.S. borders over the next few weeks as we look at the growth of civilizations in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq, Kuwait, and parts of Iran, Syria, and Turkey), China, India, Greece, Italy, as well as the Middle East, Africa, and and the rest of the Mediterranean. It will be a whirlwind tour!  So buckle up and get ready!

Note to Students:

Make sure to check out your class page often as I will be adding materials and resources all of the time. Additionally, make sure to look at the RESOURCES page for added bonus items and tools to fill your toolbox.

Remember, knowledge alone is not power. The USE of knowledge is power. Knowledge by itself is like the sharpest ax in the world. It is absolutely useless until you swing it. It’s like stored up power that simply sits there until the switch is turned on. Get the point? Acquiring knowledge is only ONE part of the equation. Using it is the other. Have a great one!
